It was a bad sunday. One that turned out to be the opposite of what it should be for the female students of the prestigious Nigerian University.
Early sunday morning (05/07/2015), the female students staying at Okpara Hostel, University of Nigeria, Nsukka had woken up, hoping to go and worship God in their various churches. They met a different thing as there was no water anywhere in the Campus.
As they waited and hoped, a water tanker stopped in front of the hostel and hell was let loose. The girls trooped out in their numbers and swooped on the tanker. Hundreds of buckets and gallons clashed and caution was let loose.
As they “fought” and “died” for the fountain of life, passers-by watched on (most of them males). The tanker driver mocked them and referred to them as, “animals without control”.
The girls expressed their displeasure over the scarcity of water and lamented its dire effect on them. One of them who simply introduced herself as Ella had this to say:
“This is not fair…this is just not fair. This is one of the reasons they drove us out of school like animals two weeks ago. Now, the problem is still with us…no water. We can’t even go to church”.
She also added that electricity has been fluctuating ever since. Another girl who said she is Mercy admitted:
“No light…no water…no nothing! I don’t even understand this country anymore”
Unnpals.com reliably gathered that water and electricity supply has been unstable in the school since the students returned from the “mid-semester break”.
